Built around pianist Mehldau’s balance of classical influences, torrential Keith Jarrett improv, and melodic Bill Evans introspection, the group features two equally talented Bay Area products in bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard (who took over for origi-nal member Jorge Rossy in 2004). The band’s latest Nonesuch effort, Ode , is a collection of new originals written by Mehldau, but follow-ers can also expect the group’s usual daring mix of standards and dramatically recast modern tunes by the likes of Radiohead, Nick Drake, and Soundgarden. The Brad Mehldau Trio plays a weekend run of performances as part of the SFJAZZ Spring Season from Friday, May 18, through Sunday, May 20, at the YBCA Forum. 8 p.m. (7 p.m. Sun.), $45-$65; www.sfjazz.org. With a stylistic palette that includes high-bounce bluegrass and soulful folk, the band revels in forward-moving melodies, cleanly interwoven harmonies, and the bump-and-pluck of geetar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and upright bass. Seasoned road warriors with a number of festival gigs under their belts, the Brothers know a group’s touring vehicle is its lifeline; hence the title of their new al-bum, Respect the Van . They also understand that music-making is a community experi-ence, a good time to be shared by perform-ers and audience alike. With this in mind, you’re encouraged to bring your dancing boots to the Brothers Comatose’s album release party Saturday, May 19, at Great American Music Hall. 9 p.m., $15; www.gamh.com.
