Thankful for a business’ due recognition: I’m not trying to say there aren’t other good medical marijuana clubs in San Francisco, because there are, but SPARC sets a gold standard — in terms of operating as a caring and responsible provider of medical marijuana — that deserves this recognition [“Best Medical Marijuana Provider,” Best Of San Francisco 2012].

Occupy’s Return
Reader loves the work of freelance writer: Hire this woman [“Unmasking the Anarchists,” Kate Conger, feature, 5/9]! I typically find SF Weekly too much on the cynical side for me, so if I thought this article was even, well-written, and attempting to inform rather than sensationalize, then the paper is doing something seriously right. Keep it up! (And seriously, hire that woman.)

Cover image doesn’t match story: I don’t understand why this reasonable reporting was given such a sinister image on the cover of SF Weekly, as if the devil himself were hiding behind a Guy Fawkes mask and coming for someone’s daughters.

Article is a good reminder of fight against hatred: This article reminds me of why I love living in the Bay Area [“Remembering Brandy Martell, the Transgender Woman Killed in Oakland,” Vanessa L. Pinto, The Exhibitionist, 5/15]. Hatred and bigotry still exist (even here), but at least we fight back. Rest in peace, Brandy. Thanks to Ms. Pinto for a great article.

Reader suggests interesting solution to facial recognition app: It makes me want to go to one of these bars with some cardboard cutouts [“San Francisco Bars to Install Creepy Facial Detection Cameras Inside Venues,” Erin Sherbert, 5/14]. Or just faces drawn on paddles. Imagine 50 ping pong paddles with a male face on one side, female on the other.

It’s not the first technology susceptible to misuse: On its face, this seems a lot less invasive than bouncers swiping a person’s ID at the door. ID info is personal and it is stored. SceneTap data is anonymous. However, this app is creating a honey pot of data that can and likely will be misappropriated at some point down the line by less ethical people. Just read about the history of red light cameras or the controversies in the early days of Zynga games. For every cool invention (like e-mail, for example), there are a ton of unscrupulous bastards who will abuse the invention (like spammers).
